Forbidden City Scent Restoration Project

By cross-validating chemical analysis with historical records, we have reconstructed the imperial fragrance formulas of the Ming and Qing dynasties, including modern recreations of traditional scents such as ambergris, agarwood, and sandalwood.

Forbidden City Scent Restoration Project

Project Background

As the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Forbidden City's olfactory environment was an integral part of court culture. Over time, however, these scents have faded beyond recall. This project aims to scientifically reconstruct these historical aromas.

Research Methods

Combining chemical analysis, historical document research, and modern fragrance technology, we first analyze the composition of existing incense artifacts in the Forbidden City. We then cross-reference these findings with historical records such as the "Qing Palace Archives" to gradually reconstruct the formulas and usage scenarios of various incenses.

Project Outcomes

  • 1Successfully restored 3 imperial spice recipes
  • 2Published 2 SCI papers
  • 3Reached a cooperation agreement with the Palace Museum
  • 4Develop a prototype for an olfactory experience device
